Tigers Take No. 5 Union to Wire, Come Up Short

JACKSON, Tenn. – Leading in the fourth quarter, West Alabama threw a scare into Union, before giving way to the fifth-ranked Lady Bulldogs, 83-76, Saturday at Fred DeLay Gymnasium.
 
Union is 25-1 overall after its 13th consecutive win, 17-1 in Gulf South Conference play. West Alabama is 11-14 and 8-10.
 
The Lady Bulldogs are one of five teams to have already clinched a spot in the 2019 GSC Championship Tournament. West Alabama currently sits seventh in the standings for an eight-team postseason field.
 
Union led by 10 after the first quarter and extended its lead to 30-19 at the 8:25 mark of the second period. West Alabama rallied to cut the Lady Bulldog Led to 40-38 at the half and then led 56-55 after three periods.
 
UWA held a 69-65 advantage with 6:28 left in the game, but Union outscored the Tigers 18-7 the rest of the way to keep its winning streak intact.
 
West Alabama outshot Union from the floor, 49 to 41 percent, and converted 50 percent (6-of-12) from three-point range while outrebounding the Lady Bulldogs 30-28. Union collected 14 steals, however, and scored 25 points off 18 Tiger turnovers.
 
Jada Smith led five Union players in double figures with 16 points. Tiffany Rechis, Morgan Martin and Jada Perkins chipped in 15 apiece. Kennedy Childers scored 13 points. Martin led Union with seven rebounds, while Perkins had five assists and five steals.
 
J'Nyiah Daniels and Elaine Field led West Alabama with 19 points each. Field hit 8-of-13 field goal attempts and Daniels made 7-of-14. Tazsa Garrett-Hammett and Bria Dent chipped in 14 points apiece. Dent collected 13 rebounds for her eighth double-double.
 
West Alabama travels to Fort Valley State on Tuesday. Union is at Lee on Thursday.
