Lady Blazers Topple UWA, 62-52

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Shon Kitchens scored 18 points to lead Valdosta State to a 62-52 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory over West Alabama Saturday at Pruitt Hall Gym.
 
The win improves VSU to 18-8, 12-6 in GSC play. West Alabama is 11-16 and 8-11.
 
The Lady Blazers have clinched a spot in the GSC Tournament, but UWA needs a win Thursday at Mississippi College to nail down a berth.
 
In a game where the lead changed hands 13 times and was tied three times, West Alabama pulled to within four points when a layup by Elaine Field cut the Lady Blazer lead to 56-52 with 1:16 left.
 
West Alabama would not score the rest of the way and Valdosta State made 6-of-8 free throws in the final 52 seconds to put the game away.
 
Sonya Franklin had 11 points for VSU to round out double figure scorers. Kayla Bonilla collected a game-high 13 rebounds for the Lady Blazers.
 
J'Nyiah Daniels was the only Tiger to score in double digits with 17 points. Field and Latangellia Walker each had six rebounds for West Alabama.
 
Valdosta State's largest lead was 10 at the final horn. West Alabama's biggest lead was six points early in the first quarter.
 
VSU outrebounded UWA 44-27, winning the points in the paint battle, 24-18.
