Tigers Fall at MC, Still Earn GSC Tourney Berth

CLINTON, Miss. – Mississippi College closed its women's basketball season by defeating West Alabama, 88-75, Thursday at A.E. Wood Coliseum, but West Alabama still managed a berth in the Gulf South Conference Tournament for the second consecutive season.
 
The Tigers finish the regular season with an 11-17 overall record, 8-12 in GSC play, good enough for the No. 8 seed in the tourney. Mississippi College ends its season 8-18 and 4-16.
 
Both West Alabama and Montevallo finished with 8-12 league records, but the Tigers earned the final tournament spot by virtue of winning both meetings against the Lady Falcons this year. Montevallo lost to Delta State, 76-58, Thursday.
 
The Tigers will travel to top-seed Union (26-2, 18-2) Tuesday for first-round play. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. in Jackson, Tennessee. The Tigers and Lady Bulldogs have played twice this season, with Union winning, 71-48, Jan. 12 in Livingston and, 83-76, Feb. 16 at Union.
 
Zan Ratcliffe scored 24 points and Coco Hobson 23 to lead Mississippi College on senior night for the Lady Choctaws. Zariah Matthews chipped in 13 points, while Hobson lead MC with eight rebounds.
 
Tazsa Garrett-Hammett led four West Alabama players in double figures with 19 points. Bria Dent scored 15 and collected 11 rebounds for her eighth double-double before fouling out with 1:49 left to play. J'Nyiah Daniels and Elaine Field chipped in 12 and 11, respectively.
 
Mississippi College led for just over 30 minutes of the game, with the lead changing hands six times and the score being tied nine times.
 
The Lady Choctaws shot 51 percent from the floor (26-of-51), 61 percent from behind the three-point line (11-of-18) and 93 percent from the free throw line (25-of-27). UWA made 21-of-26 free throws (81 percent), 22 percent from three-point land (2-of-9) and 42 percent from the floor (26-of-62).
 
West Alabama outrebounded MC, 33-30, and won the points in the paint battle, 40-22. Mississippi College blocked eight shots.
