Tigers, Flames Split GSC Doubleheader

LIVINGSTON, Ala.Austin Moffett had three hits and Taylor Clemmons a pair of doubles as West Alabama defeated Lee, 7-5, in game two and earned a split of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Monday at Tartt Filed. Lee won game one, 5-1.

The split snapped a three-game losing skid for West Alabama, leaving the Tigers 6-5 overall and 2-3 in league play. Lee is 7-6 and 3-2.

"I was proud of the way we bounced back," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "We just haven't been able to put together good back-to-back games since the opening series at Columbus State."

Thomas Zazzaro had four hits in game one and went 6-for-8 in the doubleheader for Lee. The Flames scored single runs in the second, third, fifth, sixth and seventh innings in the opener. UWA's lone run came in the third when Clemmons singled in JD Roberts.

West Alabama jumped to a 3-1 lead after three innings in the nightcap before Lee tied the game with two runs in the fourth. Clemmons second double chased Roberts to give UWA a 4-3 advantage before Miguel Pimentel's solo homer tied the game again at 4-4 in the top of the fifth. The blast was Pimentel's third of the year.

West Alabama answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. A single from Jake Hartman drove in a run and then Moffett singled in two more to make it 7-4. Zazzaro drove in a run in the top of the seventh, but the Flames couldn't manage anything more.

"Austin Moffett had a great day," Rundles said. "In fact, the production at the bottom of the order for both teams was the difference in both games."

The bottom three hitters in the lineup for Lee in game one combined for seven hits. UWA's bottom three had five hits in the second game.

Lee starter Alex Butler (2-0) earned the win in game one, allowing a run on four hits through five innings. Randall Coxwell earned his first save, not allowing a hit over the final four innings. UWA starter Cole Waites (1-1) took the loss.

Kolby Crowley (1-3) picked up the Tiger win in relief of starter Tanner Elders in game two. Nick Rathke picked up his second save. Lee reliever Ian Turner (0-1) allowed two runs in one-third of an inning to take the loss.

Clemmons extended his hitting streak to eight games by going 3-for-6 in the doubleheader. Gavin Rogers had two hits and drove in two runs in game two, as did Hartman.

West Alabama begins an eight-game road swing with a single game Friday and a doubleheader Saturday at West Georgia (4-10, 2-4). Lee is host to Lincoln Memorial (9-6) Tuesday.
