Smeeton Gets Seven Hits, Waites Flirts With No-No in GSC Split

CARROLLTON, Ga.Cole Waites took a no hitter into the eighth inning of game one and Trevor Smeeton collected seven hits as West Alabama split a Gulf South Conference doubleheader with West Georgia Monday at Cole Field.
 
West Alabama won the opener, 8-1, and West Georgia took the nightcap, 5-3.
 
On a day when the wind chill was in the 20s, the Tigers came away 7-6 overall, 3-4 in GSC play. West Georgia is 5-12 and 3-5.
 
Logan Taylor's one-out single to right field in the eighth inning broke up the no hitter for Waites (2-1), who allowed one run and one hit while striking out nine and walking seven. UWG starter Ryan Parker (1-3) took the loss in game one.
 
Had Waites managed the no hitter, it would have been the first for West Alabama since 2005 and the eighth time in program history.
 
Cason Greathouse (2-1) allowed two earned runs and seven hits, striking out three, to earn the win in game two. UWA starter Tanner Elders (2-2) absorbed the loss, allowing four hits and two earned runs in 3.2 innings.
 
Ten of West Alabama's 13 hits in game one came from the top three spots in the batting order. Smeeton had a double and four singles, JD Roberts chipped in two hits and Taylor Clemmons extended his hitting streak to nine games with three hits.
 
Smeeton was 2-for-4 in the second game, making him 7-for-9 in the doubleheader with four runs batted in. Clemmons singled in the night cap to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.
 
Lane Griffith had a pair of hits and drove in a run in the second game for West Georgia. No other Wolve had multiple hits in either game.
 
West Alabama continues an eight-game road swing Wednesday at historic Rickwood Field in Birmingham with doubleheader against Miles College. Game time is noon. West Georgia is host to Saint Anselm College Tuesday.
