Tigers Start Slow, Finish Fast to Beat UAH, 70-60

LIVINGSTON, Ala.Tazsa Garrett-Hammett scored 20 points and Bria Dent notched her sixth double-double as West Alabama defeated Alabama Huntsville, 70-60, Thursday in Gulf South Conference women's basketball at Pruitt Hall Gym.

The win improves UWA to 10-12 overall, 7-8 in the GSC. UAH had a modest three-game winning streak snapped, dropping to 10-10 and 8-6.

"A win at this time of the year is huge and I am as proud as I can be of this one," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "We found a way to get back in it after a slow start and really played well from the second quarter on."

UWA started slowly, with the Tigers first basket coming at 5:27 in the opening period on a layup by Garrett-Hammett. West Alabama trailed 11-3 at the 4:50 mark of the first quarter, but put together a 7-0 run, holding UAH to 0-of-8 from the floor in the final minutes of the first period.

UWA clamped down defensively in the second quarter, sending UAH to the halftime locker room shooting just 29 percent (9-of-31) from the floor and trailing 29-26.

West Alabama stretched its lead to 48-35 after three quarters, outscoring the Chargers 19-9 in the first 10 minutes of the second half. UAH tried to mount a charge late, but UWA snuffed out the advance to win convincingly.

"We gave them a couple of different defensive looks that kept them off balance," Cram said. "We also kept them off the free throw line."

Garrett-Hammett was one rebound shy of a double-double while leading three double-figure scorers for West Alabama. Dent finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Morgan Sams added 10 points.

"Tazsa and Bria are two great athletes who complement each other," Cram said. "Bria is all over the place and Tazsa is getting back into form that we saw last season.

West Alabama shot 50 percent (27-of-54) from the floor, a blistering 60 percent (15-of-25 in the second half. UAH managed to raise its shooting percentage to 36 percent (21-of-58) and ended up making more three pointers (10) than free throws (eight).

The Tigers won the rebounding battle 39-33 while leading for over 25 minutes of the game. The lead changed hands just once and was tied twice.

Baylee Johnson scored 27 for the Chargers to lead all scorers. Aryn Sanders chipped in 14 and Holly Harris 12. Sanders led Alabama Huntsville rebounders with eight.

West Alabama is host to No. 25 Lee (17-5, 11-3) Saturday at 2 p.m. UAH travels to Montevallo (11-11, 7-7) Saturday.
