Shorter Wins Game One of Series, 8-5

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Shorter rapped out 11 hits and limited West Alabama to just three on the way to an 8-5 Gulf South Conference baseball win over the Tigers Saturday at Tartt Field.
 
The win improves the Hawks to 13-9 overall, 6-6 in league play. West Alabama has lost four of its last five, dropping to 10-10 and 3-8.
 
West Alabama opened the scoring with a single run in the first inning, using a pair of walks and a sacrifice fly from Ben Dalke. Shorter answered with three in the top of the second on doubles by Matt Christian and Bailey Gerstner and a sac fly from Luis Acevedo.
 
The Tigers tied the score in the bottom of the third when Dalke drove in Taylor Clemmons with a bloop single to right and Trevor Smeeton then scored on a throwing error by the Hawks catcher trying to pick him off third base.
 
Shorter scored three more on two hits sin the fifth to take the advantage for good. Victor Perez and Nathaniel Butterworth doubled in runs for the Hawks.
 
Michael Avendano hit a solo homer to lead off the seventh for SU and the Hawks added another run in the eighth when Samyr Santos singled in Grestner. West Alabama pushed across two runs in the seventh on just one hit and a Shorter error.
 
Hawks starter Victor Santana (5-0) earned the win, allowing four earned runs on three hits while walking six and striking out five in 6.1 innings pitched. Kevin Ludden picked up his second save by going 2.2 hitless innings and striking out two.
 
West Alabama starter Tanner Elders (2-4) was tagged with the loss, allowing six runs on six hits while walking seven and striking out three over five innings.
 
Smeeton, Dalke and Ryan Hughes had the three Tiger hits. Gerstner, Avendano, Christian and Aaron Reardon had two hits apiece for Shorter.
 
The Tigers and Hawks conclude the series with a doubleheader Sunday at 1 p.m.
