Brown’s Walk Off Sac Fly Gives Tigers Split

LIVINGSTON, Ala.RJ Brown's walk off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning handed West Alabama a 4-3 win over Shorter and a split in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Sunday at Tartt Field. Shorter won game one 8-4.

The split leaves UWA 11-11 overall, 4-9 in GSC play. Shorter is 14-10 and 7-7.

Brown also doubled in a run in the third inning of game two and Wyatt Ball belted his second home run of the season, a two-run shot in the sixth for the Tigers.

"That was a good win for us," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "Maybe we can get some excitement back and get rolling in a better direction.

"RJ (Brown) had a couple of great at bats and the ball Wyatt Ball hit was a blast," Rundles said. "Nick struggled out of the gate but hung on for the win. Cole Waites threw one of his better games this year."

West Alabama closer Nick Rathke (1-0) picked up the win in the second game, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out two in three innings. Shorter reliever Jaydon Berry (1-5) was tagged with the loss, allowing a hit and a run in two-thirds of an inning.

Neither starting pitcher in game two figured in the decision after posting stellar outings. UWA starter Cole Waites worked six innings, allowing a run on two hits while striking out eight and walking three. SU starter Banks Woodley allowed five hits and three runs in seven innings, also striking out eight and walking three.

Shorter built an 8-1 lead in the first game before West Alabama put up a three-spot in the eighth to close to the final margin.

Jonathan Pintaro (3-1) earned the game-one pitching win in his first start of the year for the Hawks, allowing a run on four hits and striking out six in seven innings. Tiger starter Kolby Crowley (1-5) allowed 10 hits and seven runs in five innings to take the loss.

Victor Perez hit a three-run homer for Shorter in game one and Matt Christian had a solo shot as well. Samyr Santos had a pair of doubles in game one and added another in the nightcap. Bailey Gerstner, Michael Avendano, Aaron Reardon and Santos all had three hits over the two games for Shorter.

Ball had three hits in the two games for West Alabama. Ben Dalke doubled in each game. Gavin Rogers drove in two runs in the first game.

West Alabama takes the week off before hosting Saint Leo (14-10) on Saturday at Tartt Field in a doubleheader to kick off a three-game series. First pitch Saturday is set for 2 p.m. Shorter travels to Lincoln Memorial on Tuesday.
