Robert’s Walk-Off Single Lifts Tigers to 10-9 Win

LIVINGSTON, Ala.JD Roberts' walk-off single lifted West Alabama to its fifth straight win, a 10-9 victory over William Carey, Wednesday at Tartt Field.
 
The win closed a seven-game homestand for West Alabama, now 15-11. William Carey dropped to 10-16.
 
William Carey jumped to a 3-0 lead after two innings, but West Alabama scored five runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-3 lead. The big blow of the inning was a three-run home run from Gavin Rogers, his fourth of the year and third in the last four games.
 
Rogers added a single, a walk and a fielder's choice to extend his reached base streak to 16 straight at bats before having it snapped with a fly out to center field in the eighth. He now has 10 runs batted in in the last four games.
 
WCU scored a single run in the sixth, but the Tigers answered with two in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to 7-4.
 
The Crusaders took the lead at 8-7 in the top of the eighth inning on three hits and a Tiger error, but UWA responded with a run in the bottom of the frame to tie the score at 8-8.
 
William Carey scored an unearned run in the ninth when Sloan Dieter scored on a throwing error during an attempt to pick him off third base.
 
A pair of walks, a throwing error from WCU and Roberts single provided the two runs for the UWA win in the bottom of the ninth.
 
Ben Dalke and Ryan Hughes walked to start the inning. Dalke was forced at third base on Justin Booker's fielder's choice, but Crusader third baseman Caleb Ledet's throw across the diamond for the double play attempt sailed wide and Hughes scored from first. Booker was left standing on third to score on Roberts' single.
 
Nick Rathke (3-0), the sixth West Alabama pitcher worked the final 1.1 innings for the win, allowing an unearned run on two hits. Colby Shaw (1-3) was charged with the loss after going 1.2 innings in relief, allowing two hits and three runs, although only one of the runs was earned.
 
William Carey center fielder Bryson Medious had five hits for the Crusaders. Jonathan Turner and Pablo Torres chipped in three more apiece in an 18-hit WCU attack. Dieter, Jake Smith and Landon Keller each had two hits.
 
Chris Simon collected three of West Alabama's 10 hits. Booker and Roberts had two each. Taylor Clemmons had just one hit , but drive in four runs on a single, a sacrifice fly and by getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth inning.
 
West Alabama starts a four-game road swing with a Sunday Gulf South Conference doubleheader at Union (9-18). William Carey begins a three-game series at Middle Georgia on Friday.
