Tigers Sweep Bulldogs to Run Winning Streak to Seven

JACKSON, Tenn. – it took 20 innings, but West Alabama extended its winning streak to seven games by sweeping a Gulf South Conference doubleheader from Union Sunday at Fesmire Field. West Alabama won the opener, 9-1, and then took the nightcap, 5-2, in 11 innings.

The Tigers are 17-11 overall, 6-9 in GSC play. Union is 9-20 and 3-14. Game three of the series is set for Monday at 2 p.m.

Union scored a run in the bottom of the first inning of the first game, but it was all the Bulldogs would get. West Alabama answered with four in the third, three in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

JD Roberts collected four hits for UWA In game one, while Gavin Rogers had three and drove in three runs. Ben Dalke chipped in a pair of doubles to drive in two runs. Trevor Smeeton and Jonathan Thibodeau had two hits each and Ryan Hughes knocked in a pair of runs.

Peyton Warren (3-0) worked seven innings, scattering seven hits and allowing just one run for the win in his first GSC starting assignment. The sophomore from Brentwood, Tennessee didn't issue a walk and struck out two. Landen Davis and JD Brown worked scoreless eighth and ninth innings for UWA. Union starter Brandon Maxwell (1-5) was tagged with the loss.

Cole Waites, UWA's game two starter, took a no hitter into the seventh inning before Nolen Milton singled up the middle to end Waites' second bid at a no-no this season. He took one into the eighth inning at West Georgia earlier in the season. After a bunt single by Caleb DeMarigny and a sacrifice bunt by Josh Bozoian, Milton scored on a ground out to send the game into extra innings.

Union had a chance to win the game in the eighth, but Charlie Ellis was gunned down at the plate trying to score the game winner when Wyatt Ball corralled Dacoda Stone's double in deep left, relayed the throw to third baseman Taylor Clemmons who got the relay to catcher Justin Booker on time.

RJ Brown's two-out single drove in Ball in the top of the 10th, but Union answered with a run of its own in the bottom half. Hayden Lewis tripled in Josh Frantz but was left stranded on third base.

Rogers had upped his RBI total to five for the doubleheader by driving in two runs in the top of the 11th. Ball had an RBI single to cap off the scoring.

Tiger reliever Nick Rathke (4-0) worked two innings for the win. Kolby Crowley put together a scoreless bottom of the 11th for his first save. Union reliever Cooper Bullough (0-1) was tagged with the loss.

Both game-two starters spun respectable days from the mound despite not getting a decision. UWA's Waites worked eight innings, allowing a run on just three hits while striking out 11 and walking one. Union lefty Ryan Mets went nine innings, allowing a run on two hits while walking three and striking out six.

Rogers had two more this for UWA in the nightcap to go 5-for-9 in the doubleheader. Rogers is 13-for-20 over the last six games with 15 RBI to raise his team-leading batting average to .409. Smeeton had two more hits in the second game.

Game three will be broadcast live on ESPN 104.9 and on the ESPN1049 App. Tiger fans can also go to www.grantellbroadcasting.com to hear the broadcast.
