Tigers Win Eighth Straight in Sweep at Union

JACKSON, Tenn.Ryan Hughes drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning as West Alabama defeated Union, 4-3, Monday to sweep the Gulf South Conference series from the Bulldogs.
 
The win was the eight consecutive for the Tigers, who are now 18-11 overall, 7-9 in GSC play. Union dropped to 9-22 and 3-15.
 
Union opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the second inning on Dacoda Stone's two-out single. West Alabama tied the score with a pair of runs in the third when Taylor Clemmons drove in a run with a two-out single after Hughes had scored on a throwing error by the Union catcher.
 
The Tigers took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning. Jake Hartman led off the frame with a walk, stole second and then scored on another Union error.
 
The Bulldogs tied the game in the eighth inning at 3-3. Josh Frantz walked to lead off the inning and came around to score on a two-out single from Jesse Kelley.
 
Ben Dalke doubled to open the top of the ninth, moved to third on a Justin Booker single and then scored when Hughes drove the first pitch from Bulldog reliever Walker Adkisson into right field.
 
Kolby Crowley (3-5) picked up the pitching win, allowing a hit and striking out one in 1.1 innings. Tiger starter Gavin Rogers worked six innings, scattering eight hits while allowed two runs and striking out five. Union starter Scott Shearer (1-3) took the loss.
 
Wyatt Ball and Hughes had two hits apiece in a nine-hit UWA attack. Josh Bozoian, Caleb DeMarigny, Hayden Lewis and Kelley all had two hits for Union.
 
West Alabama concludes a four-game road swing at William Carey Wednesday. Union remains at home against Trevecca Nazarene Tuesday.
