Tigers Sweep Miles at Historic Rickwood Field

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Taking a break from Gulf South Conference play, West Alabama traveled to historic Rickwood Field and swept a doubleheader from Miles College Wednesday. UWA won the opener, 6-4, and the second game, 8-2.
 
West Alabama is 9-6 as the Tigers continue an eight-game road swing at Montevallo Sunday. UWA will play a doubleheader Sunday at 1 p.m. and a single game Monday at 2.
Miles dropped to 5-9 heading into a three-game series at Paine College this weekend.
 
Ryan Hughes had three hits and drove in two runs in the first game for the Tigers. Trevor Smeeton had two hits in 10-hit UWA attack in game one and added two more in the nightcap, driving in a pair of runs. Jake Hartman tripled in two runs in opener.
 
JD Roberts, Jaylon Keys and Hartman all chipped in two hits for UWA in game two. Smeeton and Roberts both doubled and Austin Moffett stole four bases in the doubleheader.
 
Brandon Conner and Ryne Benson had two hits each for Miles in game one, including Connor's fourth home run of the year.
 
Starter Peyton Warren (1-0) worked 5.1 innings, walking one and striking out four to earn the win in game 1. Nick Rathke worked a scoreless final inning for his third save in game one. Miles reliever Noah Ledbetter (0-2) took the loss, giving up a run on two hits in just a third of an inning.
 
Micah McGaha (1-0)  was the winner in game two, working two scoreless innings in relief of starter Kolby Crowley, who also didn't allow a run. Five West Alabama pitchers combined to allow only two Miles' hits. Golden Bears starter Peyton Godfrey (0-1) absorbed the loss, giving up nine hits and six earned runs in 3.1 innings.
