Tigers Outlast Lee in GSC Tournament Quarterfinals

LIVINGSTON, Ala.– Another close battle for the West Alabama Tigers ends in another tight win as UWA defeated the Lee University Flames 74-69 in overtime Tuesday night in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium to advance to the semifinals of the 2019 VisitSpaceCoast.com GSC Men's Basketball Championship Tournament.

The Tigers to 22-6 overall and match the program's all-time season wins mark set in the 2014-15 season. Lee's season comes to a close at 15-14 on the year.

"These games are hard. If you take a look at the stats coming in, Lee's field goal percentages are really really good throughout the course of the whole season," said Head coach Allen Sharpe. "In the two times we've beaten them (previously), they've been over 50 percent from the floor in both of those games. We've been fortunate enough to win. They still shot a great percentage to night. They're hard to guard. They have a system of play that's hard to guard, it's unique and they have players who make shots. We did just enough to have some breathing room down the stretch."

Charles Tripp played a huge role offensively off the bench. The senior forward scored a team leading 21 points and added four rebounds, two assists and a block. Ricky Dunnaway finished with a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

"Tripp is very talented offensively. We've kind of tried to find ways to get him and Ricky together," said Sharpe. "That makes us more balanced offensively, because both of them can score the ball in the paint. It helped us tremendously. We feel like we're going to guard people and the defense will give us a chance to us. We worry about us offensively sometimes, because we rely so much on LaJuan (Hardy) and Josh (Fleming). Tripp being effectively offensively helps us in so many ways."

Hardy and Fleming both scored 12 points each while Hardy added four assists and both guards came away with two steals each.

All eyes are on the Pete Hanna Center on the campus of Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama where the remainder of the GSC Championship Tournament will be held. Awaiting the Tigers will be the third seed Alabama-Huntsville who defeated West Georgia 68-66 in the final seconds.

"It'll be really tough. They're really good and hard to play against," said Sharpe. "They too have a unique style of offense that puts a ton of pressure on you defensively. Let's hope we play well enough to give us a chance to keep playing deep into the conference tournament."

Tipoff is set for 7:15 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN 104.9.
