Tigers Extend Baseball Win Streak to Nine Games

HATTIESBURG, Miss.Taylor Clemmons homered, had three hits and drove in four runs to lead West Alabama to a 12-9 college baseball win over William Carey Wednesday at Milton Wheeler Field, extending the Tigers winning streak to nine games.
 
West Alabama is 19-11, while William Carey dropped to 10-20 with its sixth straight loss.
 
All 20 batters who came to the plate combined for both teams reached base in the game. Both teams had 10 hits, combined for 19 bases on balls and six hit by pitches.
 
West Alabama reliever Tanner Elders (3-4) picked up the win, allowing two hits and one earned run in 1.1 innings pitched. Nick Rathke, the sixth Tiger pitcher, worked a perfect ninth inning for his fifth save. WCU reliever Gabriel Rosado (1-3), one of eight Crusader pitchers, took the loss.
 
West Alabama jumped to a 6-0 lead in the second inning on bases-loaded walks by Jonathan Thibodeau and Chris Simon, a double from JD Roberts to drive in two runs, an RBI single by Trevor Smeeton and a sacrifice fly from Taylor Clemmons. Smeeton's single extended his consecutive games reaching base streak to 24 games.
 
William Carey got three runs, two unearned, in the bottom of the second. A double by Jake Smith, coupled with a pair of Tiger errors, aided in the Crusaders cutting the Tiger lead in half.
 
The Crusaders tied the game at 6-6 with three runs in the bottom of the third on just one hit, taking advantage of two hit batters and a wild pitch.
 
Taylor Clemmons hit his second homer of the season, a two-run shot over the left field wall, as West Alabama scored four in the top of the fourth inning. Wyatt Ball doubled in a run and Thibodeau had a sacrifice fly to cap off the inning.
 
The Crusaders used two hits to score two runs in the bottom of the fourth to trim the West Alabama lead to 10-8. The runs scored on a ground ball out and a passed ball. An RBI single from Clemmons stretched the UWA lead to 11-8 in the top of the fifth.
 
Smith drove in his fourth run of the game for William Carey in the bottom of the sixth to cut the UWA lead to 11-9. Nathan Nicolosi got the final out of the inning with a one-pitch groundout to end the Crusader threat with runners at the corners.
 
West Alabama returned the favor with a single run in the top of the seventh when RJ Brown was chased by a Ball single to increase the Tiger lead to the final margin.
 
Hartman and Thibodeau chipped in two hits each for the Tigers. Jonathan Turner had a pair of hits for William Carey.
West Alabama is scheduled to return to Gulf South Conference play with a doubleheader Saturday against Alabama Huntsville. First pitch for Autism Awareness Day at Tartt Field is set for 2 p.m. WCU is on the road Friday to face Stillman.
