Statesmen Take Game One 8-2

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State took advantage of four West Alabama errors and stranded 13 Tiger runners on the way to an 8-2 Gulf South Conference baseball victory over West Alabama Sunday at Boo Ferris Field at Harvey Stadium.
 
Delta State is 28-10 overall and 16-8 in GSC play. West Alabama is 22-13 and 9-11. The Tigers and the Statesmen finish the series with a doubleheader Monday, First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
 
The Tigers jumped to a 2-0 lead after an inning and a half, but the Statesmen rallied to scored eight unanswered runs for the win. DSU scored a single runs in the bottom of the second and eighth and put up three each in the fifth and sixth.
 
David Herrington and Josh Russell had two hits apiece in a seven-hit Statesmen attack. Herrington drive in two runs. West Alabama managed eight hits, with Jake Hartman getting two for the Tigers.
 
DSU starter Hunter Riggins (8-3) pitched seven innings, allowing just one earned run on seven hits to pick up the win. UWA starter Cole Waites (3-3) absorbed the loss, allowing four hits, three earned runs, while walking four and striking out six in five innings.
 
Both games of the Monday doubleheader will be carried live on ESPN 104.9, the Twin States Sports Authority.
