Choctaws Sweep Tigers in GSC Doubleheader

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Mississippi College had a grand slam home run and a triple play on the way to sweeping West Alabama in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Saturday at Tartt Field.
 
The 17th-ranked Choctaws won game one, 13-7, and completed the sweep with an 8-2 victory in the nightcap to improve to 27-13 overall and a league-leading 17-5 in conference play. West Alabama lost its fifth straight and is 22-17 and 9-15.
 
Mississippi College first baseman Blaine Crim got five hits in the doubleheader and drove in nine runs. Six of his RBI came on home runs, a grand slam in game one and a two-run shot in the first inning of the second game. The senior from Mobile now has 11 homers.
 
Trailing 7-2 in the fifth inning of the second game, West Alabama loaded the bases with nobody out, but Taylor Clemmons grounded into a 5-4-3 triple play to end the threat and crush UWA's momentum. The Tigers got two runners on in the next two innings but failed to score.
 
RJ Brown led off the fifth inning of game one with his second homer of the year and Taylor Clemmons hit his third of the season in the seventh, a two-run shot. Ryan Hughes, JD Roberts and Wyatt Ball also drove in runs for the Tigers in game one.
 
Ben Dalke hit his first homer of the year for UWA, a solo shot in game two. Justin Booker drive in the other Tiger run with a double.
 
Brandon Broussard had a home run in each game for Mississippi College, a solo shot in game one and a three-run blast in game two. The two long balls give him three for the year.
 
Dylan Duplechain had three this and scored four runs for the Choctaws in the first game. Hunter Sykes had three hits and scored three runs in the opener as well.
 
MC starters Chris Cosby (7-2) and Zack Ingram (6-2) earned the pitching wins. Garrett Hollinghead picked up  a three-inning save in game one. Tiger starters Peyton Warren (4-2) and Cole Waites (3-4) absorbed the losses.
 
West Alabama finishes the regular season with five straight road games, a doubleheader against Young Harris (Ga.) College (29-16) on Tuesday and a three-game GSC series at West Florida (29-14, 19-7) on Friday and Saturday.
 
Mississippi College finishes he regular season at home against Delta State with a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday. Both the Choctaws and the Statesmen have clinched berths in the 2019 GSC Championship Tournament that begins May 3.
 
Seven of the eight tournament spots have been filled. Shorter (11-14), Lee (11-14) and UWA (9-15) are vying for the final spot.
 
Shorter is finished with league play after having all three games in a home series with Valdosta State cancelled this weekend. Lee travels to Auburn-Montgomery (12-14)  next weekend for a three-game series.
