Statesmen Sweep Doubleheader, Series From UWA

CLEVLEAND, Miss. – West Alabama let early leads get away on both games as No. 18 Delta State sweep a Gulf South Conference doubleheader from the Tigers Monday at Ferris Field at Harvey Stadium. DSU won game one, 12-2, and took game two, 4-2.

The Statesmen are now 30-10 overall, 18-8 in GSC. West Alabama is 22-15, 9-13, and will play the final two conference series of the season with their backs to the wall for a berth in the eight-team conference tournament scheduled to begin May 3.

UWA jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one when RJ Brown reached on an error, stole second base and scored on a single by Ben Dalke. Delta State then put 12 runs on the board before Brown hit his first homer of the year for the final margin.

The majority of DSU's damage in game one was done in the fourth inning, when the Statesmen sent 13 hitters to the plate, scoring nine runs on six hits and three bases on balls. Every Delta State player who went to the plate got a hit in game one in a 14-hit onslaught.

UWA jumped to a 2-0 lead in game two when Justin Booker doubled in Taylor Clemmons and Dalke, who had led off the inning with singles and were moved up on a sacrifice bunt from Wyatt Ball. It would be all the Tigers would get.

Delta State scored one in the fourth and three more in the fifth put away game two. The big blow for the Statesmen was a two-run home run from Jake Barlow, his eighth of the year.

DSU starting pitchers Dalton Minton (7-2) and Seth Hougesen (6-0) earned the wins. TJ Childree earned his fifth save in the second game. Minton scattered four hits and allowed just one earned run. Hougesen went 5.2 innings, giving up six hits and two runs.

West Alabama starters Tanner Elders (3-5) and Peyton Warren (4-1) took the losses. Elders allowed 10 hits and seven runs in three innings. Warren worked six innings, allowing 10 hits and two earned runs.

Dalke had three hits in the second game for UWA, four in the doubleheader.

Payton Lane had three hits for Delta State in game two, five in the two games. David Herrington had a pair of hits. David Sargent, Jake Barlow, Weber Herbison and Brett Young had two hits each in game one.

West Alabama plays its final home series of the season beginning Friday when GSC-leading Mississippi College visits Tartt Field for a three-game series. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. Delta State is host to Arkansas-Monticello Tuesday at 6 p.m.
