Young Harris Sweeps Doubleheader from UWA

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Despite combining for just eight hits in the two games, Young Harris swept a college baseball doubleheader Tuesday from West Alabama at Zell B. Miller Field. The Mountain Lions won game one, 2-1, and the second game, 3-1.

The sweep improves Young Harris to 31-16. West Alabama lost its seventh straight, dropping to 22-19.

GAME 1 (YHC 2, UWA 1)
Young Harris scored the game-winner when Tyler Washington scored on a mishandled ground ball in the bottom of the seventh to walk off the Mountain Lions with a 2-1 victory over the Tigers.

West Alabama opened the scoring when Gavin Rogers singled in Trevor Smeeton for an unearned run after a two-out error on the Mountain Lions shortstop kept the inning alive.

West Alabama had a run taken off the board in the fourth when RJ Brown failed to step on third base on a double off the left field wall by Trevor Smeeton. The appeal to third ended the inning.

YHC designated hitter T.J. Byrd drilled a solo homer over the right field wall to tie the score at 1-1 in the sixth inning.

The Tigers had the possible game-winning run gunned down at the plate in the top of the seventh inning when Smeeton was erased on the throw from left fielder Tyler Washington off a single by Gavin Rogers.

Tucker Daniel (5-0) earned the pitching win in relief, allowing no runs on two hits with two strikeouts and two walks in three innings. Tanner Elders (3-6) took the loss in two-thirds of an inning in relief, allowing the unearned game-winner on one hit.

Jake Hartman and Rogers had two of UWA's nine hits. The Tigers left 10 runners on base. Young Harris managed just three hits and left three runners.

GAME 2  (YHC 3, UWA 1)
Young Harris scored in the bottom of the first when Byrd walked, stole second and scored on a double by Zavier Lushington, but West Alabama answered in the top of the second on a solo homer from Wyatt Ball, his third of the year.

The Mountain Lions took a 2-1 lead in the third inning when Lushington was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a double by Dahlton Cash and scored on a wild pitch.

Washington blasted a solo homer to right, his second of the season, to open the bottom of the sixth, stretching the Mountain Lion lead to the final 3-1 margin.

YHC reliever Cameron Williams (6-4) picked up the pitching win, allowing a hit in two innings. Matt Rogers earned his fourth save with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out two, UWA reliever Kolby Crowley (3-7) took the loss, allowing two runs and three hits in four innings.

West Alabama managed just three hits in the game, a pair of singles and Ball's homer. The Tigers left eight on base. YHC had just five hits, with Lushington's double and Washington's homer highlighting the effort.
