Argos Score Late for Come From Behind Win

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Sixth-ranked West Florida scored six runs in its final two at bats to notch a 7-4 Gulf South Conference baseball win over West Alabama Friday at Jim Spooner Field.

The Argonauts improve to 31-14 overall, 20-7 in GSC play. The Tigers dropped to 22-20 and 9-16 with an eighth-straight loss.

The loss also eliminates West Alabama from an opportunity to earn the final berth in the GSC Championship Tournament. UWA needed to sweep the Argos in the three-game series and hope for AUM to win two of three from Lee.

West Alabama led 4-1 after six innings, scoring four runs on four hits in the fourth after West Florida had jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Tigers send 10 batters to the plate with Wyatt Ball driving in two runs, as well as Trevor Smeeton and Justin Brooker one apiece.

The Argos got a two-RBI triple from Trevor Payne and Adam Imwalle drove in another run as UWF tied the game at 4-4 in the seventh inning.

UWA starting pitcher Cole Waites struck out the side in the seventh to give him 118, tying the UWA single season record set by JT Salter in 2018.

A four-hit eighth inning pushed across three more for the final margin. Isaac Phillips and Payne had doubles in the inning.

Payne had three hits and drove in three runs in an 11-hit Argo attack. Matthew Estrada also chipped in three hits and Imwalle two more. Booker had two of UWA's seven hits.

Hunter Lucas (1-0) worked two-thirds of an inning in relief to pick up the pitching win. Kirk Maddox managed a one-two-three ninth for his second save. Tiger reliever Kolby Crowley (3-8) was tagged with the loss.

The Tigers and Argos finish the series with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday
