Volleyball Splits First Day of FMU Invitational

FLORENCE, S.C.– The West Alabama Volleyball team split the first day of the Francis Marion Invitational by dropping the first match but winning the second contest in thrilling fashion to earn the first victory of the 2019 season Friday evening in the Smith University Center.
 
"We did not exactly get the results that we wanted today, but we overcame some things and finally got a W," said Head coach Hilary Lobenstein. "We look forward to tomorrow's matches and the opportunities to grow as a team."
 
The Tigers (1-6) first win of the season came in a five-set victory over Converse College winning the match 25-23, 25-20, 17-25, 16-25 and 15-12.
 
Taylor Donato was electric in the win, finishing with a double-double thanks to 22 kills and 20 digs. The senior from Peoria, Arizona finished with a .222 attack percentage.
 
Bret Luther finished just shy of her career high in kills with 12 on a .321 attack percentage and added two blocks defensively. Jessica Akiona posted a double-double of her own with 10 kills and 10 digs while adding two service aces and two block assists. 
 
Rebecca Jonson led in digs with 23 while Grace Harris posted 52 assists and 14 digs in the second weekend of her collegiate career. Lindsey Heller turned in a quality performance with nine kills and 13 digs. 
 
Earlier in the day, UWA dropped a four-set match to UNC-Pembroke (26-24, 25-27, 25-23, 25-18).
 
Donato and Akiona both turned in double-doubles as Donato notched 15 kills and 14 digs and Akiona went for 12 kills and 12 digs. Harris got her own double-double with 42 assists and 17 digs. Heller added 11 kills. 
 
West Alabama returns to action tomorrow against Mount Olive at 12 p.m. CDT and later against the hosts Francis Marion at 4 p.m. CDT. Game links will be available on uwaathletics.com.
