Donato Breaks Kills Record, Tigers Sweep Second Day of FMU Invitational

FLORENCE, S.C.— Winning a match always makes a trip home easier but winning two matches and breaking records as the University of West Alabama Volleyball team did today makes it easier. The Tigers swept both of today's contest on the second day of the Francis Marion Invitational Tournament in the Smith University Center.

"We fought hard today and played our most consistent and fundamental volleyball yet," said Head coach Hilary Lobenstein.

Alongside sweeping the final day of the tournament, senior outside hitter Taylor Donato set a UWA match record for total kills and kills in a five-game match with 30 in the win over Francis Marion (19-25, 25-13, 25-21, 17-25, 15-8).

The native of Peoria, Arizona put up a .377 attack percentage and added 16 digs defensively for another double-double, her third of the tournament.

Ally Craig was second with 11 kills while Grace Harris passed 50 assists.

Jessica Akiona led with 19 digs while Rebecca Johnson put up 16 digs and Harris added 12.

Alyssa Hansen led Francis Marion with 26 kills.

UWA (3-6) started the day with a four-set win over Mount Olive, 25-13; 23-25; 25-20 and 25-17.

Donato led the way for the Tigers as she put up 16 kills with a .306 attack percentage. Bret Luther added 12 kills and six block assists defensively. Lindsey Heller and Craig both put up 10 kills each. Harris kept the offense moving with 46 assists and two service aces.

Heller, Harris and Beatriz Volponi de Giordan each had four block assists. Johnson led by far with digs with 19.

West Alabama is set to host a tournament this weekend in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium as Augusta, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas make the trip to Livingston, Alabama for the two-day, six-match event. Links to live stats and live video for each match will be available on uwaathletics.com.
