Tigers Claim Both Contests Saturday

LIVINGSTON, Ala.– The University of West Alabama Volleyball team took care of business Saturday in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium and came away with two wins to close the final day of the West Alabama Tournament.
 
The Tigers started the day with a straight-sets victory over the Southern Arkansas Muleriders, 3-0, winning the games 25-15, 25-21 and 25-13.
 
Taylor Donato led the 14 kills but saw her double-double streak go by the wayside with six digs. Jessica Akiona and Bret Luther both finished with nine kills. Grace Harris kept the offense moving with 30 assists while Lindsey Heller led the defense with 11 digs and three block assists.
 
Beatriz Giordan added three block assists as well and Rebecca Johnson added 10 digs.
 
Morgan Gross led the effort for SAU with 10 kills.
 
UWA later wrapped the tournament with a win in four sets over the Montevallo Falcons, 3-1.
 
The first set was a marathon in favor of the Tigers, 31-29 with the second set going 25-20 to UWA as well. Montevallo took the third set, 25-21, however West Alabama put the match away with a fourth set win of 25-12.
 
Donato led in kills with 16 and got her fifth double-double thanks to 15 digs. Akiona grabbed a double-double as well with 13 kills and 21 digs. Luther and Heller rounded out the kills leaders with 11 kills and nine kills respectively. Harris moved the offense with 43 assists coupled with 
 
Johnson set a career high with 30 digs in the match. Heller rounded out the double-digit digs with 14. 
 
Brioni Dixon led the Falcons with 16 kills.
 
For their efforts, Donato and Johnson were named to the All-West Alabama Tournament team. 
 
The Tigers are done with the regular season tournaments and look forward to the start of Gulf South Conference play Tuesday against Mississippi College. Game time in Clinton, Mississippi is set for 6 p.m. Links to live stats and live video are available on uwaathletics.com.
