Tigers Fight Hard, but Fall in Straight Sets to #2 CSSBU

STEPHENVILLE, Texas –The West Alabama Volleyball team held a lead late in both of the first two sets, but in the end the second ranked team in the nation Cal State-San Bernardino Coyotes pulled away to prevail in straight sets over the Tigers in the first day of the Texan Invitational hosted by Tarleton State.
 
CSSBU (1-0) won the sets 25-21, 28-26 and 25-16 en route to opening the season with a win over the Tigers (0-1).
 
"It was a great way to start off the season," said Head coach Hilary Lobenstein. "We set the standard high for ourselves."
 
Jessica Akiona started her year right where she left of as the reigning Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Year turned in a double-double effort with 13 kills and 12 assists to lead the team in both categories with a .345 hitting percentage. She also added a block and service ace.
 
Taylor Donato finished with 12 kills, nine digs and two service aces while Rebecca Johnson added 11 digs. Grace Harris finished her Tiger debut with 26 assists, four digs, two blocks and a service ace.
 
Alexis Cardoza led Coyotes with 14 kills and 15 digs while Sascha Dominique with 12 kills.
 
West Alabama returns to action tomorrow with two more ranked opponents as the Tigers face #14 Rockhurst at 9 a.m. and hosts #10 Tarleton State at 7 p.m.
