Lee Erases Big Deficit to Defeat West Alabama

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Lee, ranked seventh in the nation, came from 16 points down to defeat West Alabama, 73-62, Saturday afternoon at Pruitt Hall in Gulf South Conference women's basketball.

The victory was the seventh straight for the Lady Flames, improving the squad from Cleveland, Tennessee to 17-1 overall, 9-1 in GSC play. West Alabama is 8-7 and 3-6 with its fourth loss in the last five outings.

West Alabama exploded out of the gate, building a 16 point advantage with 5:21 left to play in the first half. Lee went on an 8-0 run the last 2:41 of the second quarter while the Tigers were scoreless for 3:18 but led 34-28 at the break.

"The game changed with three to four minutes left in the first half," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "We have to learn to play well for four quarters in this league. We aren't the kind of team that can expect to play well for two quarters and win."

The Lady Flames tied the score at 35 with 7:16 left in the third period and led 51-50 at the end of three periods. After shooting just 25 percent (9-for-36) in the first half, Lee converted 60 percent (18-for-30) in the second half to ice the game.

"Our kids played hard, but they eventually wore us down," Cram said. "They have a bunch of seniors and are playing 10 to 11 people while we are playing five or six for extended minutes.

"If you have a weakness they are going to expose it pretty quickly," Cram said. "They got physical with us and we bowed down to that physicality. When you have 19 turnovers against the No. 7 team in the country it usually isn't going to work out well."

Lee outrebounded the Tigers, 38-34, and outscored UWA, 48-34 in the paint. The Lady Flames used Tiger turnovers to score 21 points and had 16 of the fast-break variety.

Haley Schubert led all scorers with 20 points for Lee, making 8-of-11 field goal attempts and 3-of-3 free throw tries. Lindsey Roddy added 18, while Abby Bertram had 11 points and nine rebounds.

Tazsa Garrett-Hammett and Bria Dent both scored 15 points for West Alabama. Dent collected 11 rebounds for her ninth double-double. Naelyn Rios scored 14 points.

West Alabama travels to Montevallo (13-3, 7-2) Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff. Mississippi College (8-8, 5-5) visits Lee on Thursday.
