Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

UWA Falls on Road to Montevallo, 71-61

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's basketball team challenged the Montevallo Falcons early, but a sluggish second half led to a 71-61 loss Thursday night in Gulf South Conference action in Trustmark Arena.

UWA fell to 8-8 overall and 4-7 in the GSC. Montevallo moved to 14-3 on the season and 8-2 in the league.

"I'm very disappointed in the lack of effort tonight," said Head coach Rusty Cram. "We played with them the first half, but the problem is we should've put them down the first half. We were lethargic all night. We blew a golden opportunity tonight to pick up a win on the road in crunch time in the conference for us."

The Tigers held Montevallo to 26 percent (11-of-41) from the floor and 14 percent (3-of-21) from three in the first half, but the Falcons erupted to go 50 percent (15-of-30) in the second half which included a 58.6 percent (7-of-12) effort from behind the arc.

Tazsa Garrett-Hammett finished with 19 points, nine rebounds, a block and steal while Bria Dent posted her 10th double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds along with eight steals and a block.

"They can't do it every time. Obviously, they're the two top returning players but they're going to need some help," said Cram. "Then only reason it was a two-point game was because of those two. We have to work out what we're doing with the rest of the team to get them some help."

As a unit, the Tigers were 37.7 percent (23-of-61) from the field, 15.4 percent (2-of-13) from beyond the arc and 72.2 percent (13-of-18) from the free throw line.

Aaliyah Rice led Montevallo in scoring despite early foul trouble with 18 points and six rebounds. Paige Ward scored 15 points while Shyan Flack registered a double-double with 13 points and 17 rebounds.

West Alabama will look to regroup for Saturday's matchup against West Florida who came up short 63-61 to AUM tonight.

"We have to iron some things out and if we don't do that it doesn't matter who we play," said Cram. "West Florida doesn't have the record it usually has but they're in every ball game. They're hungry to win and playing harder than we are right now."

Tipoff in Pensacola, Florida is set for 4 p.m. with the broadcast set for ESPN 104.9.
