Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers Hang on for 61-59 Victory over AUM

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – As the final shot fell short and time expired, the upset bid by the Auburn Montgomery Warhawks fell short and the University of West Alabama men's basketball team held on to grab a 61-59 win Thursday night in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium in Gulf South Conference action.

UWA improves to 10-2 on the season, 3-1 in the GSC and pushes the win streak to six-games. AUM falls to 6-7 overall and 1-4 in the league.

"Not our best game, but we did just enough to get the win. That's why you really have to take pride in defending and holding people off the scoreboard," said Head coach Allen Sharpe. "We didn't play well on the offensive end, but we did enough to get through it and get the win."

The offense was rough for the Tigers tonight as the team shot 39.1 percent (18-of-46) from the floor, 38.9 percent (7-of-18) from three and 64.3 percent from the free throw line.

LaJuan Hardy finished with 15 points, seven assists and six bounds and Ricky Dunnaway scored 15 points with four rebounds, three blocks and an assist. Darron Johnson added 14 points.

Deandre Harper led on the boards with seven rebounds and added five points, two blocks, a steal and an assist.

Despite the struggles from the floor, it was big three-pointers from Hardy and Johnson that were the last shots from the floor hit by the team which provided just enough distance to hold off the Warhawks.

"That's something that will be good for us. Making big shots down the stretch and seeing the ball go in was good," said Sharpe. "Psychologically that's good for our team to feel like we're going to make big shots down the stretch. We have 16 more conference games and we're liable to have more like this that'll go down to the wire and it'll boil down to one or two possessions at the end."

Joshua Moore led AUM with 14 points seven rebounds as the local product brought a large following to Pruitt Hall Gym.

"I don't know much, but I know Demopolis is not too far from here, Josh Moore is from there and he had a career night tonight so far," said Sharpe. "He's a good player and it may catapult him to a great year. He made some big threes and you could argue that he was the difference. Him making those perimeter shots affected the margin."

Maharrith Jackson scored 12 points and Carlos Bell added 10 to round out players in double figures for the Warhawks.

West Alabama will have a day to prepare for the top offense in the conference as Valdosta State (9-3, 3-2) heads to Livingston for GSC action Saturday at 4 p.m.
