Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Streak Snapped at Six, Tigers Fall to VSU 69-59

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – A second consecutive rough shooting night for the University of West Alabama men's basketball team could not be overcome the second time around as the Valdosta State Blazers led by as much as 20 points on the way to a 69-59 win in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium Saturday evening in Gulf South Conference action.

The loss drops UWA to 10-3 on the season, 3-2 in the GSC and saw a six-game winning streak fall to the wayside. VSU improves 10-3 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

"It's a helpless feeling as a coach when good looks and open shots aren't falling," said Associate head coach Nick Woodruff. "You can't draw anything up to get them more open. It's rough in those situations. You have to take games like this, learn as much as you can and get better."

The Tigers shot 36.2 percent (21-of-58) from the floor and 17.6 percent (3-of-17) from three-point line in the loss.

"You look at the numbers, especially the three-ball numbers, and that's not us," said Woodruff. "Credit to Valdosta State for running us off the line and making things difficult for us."

The physical matchup between last year's Co-GSC Champions ended the first half with a 32-30 lead for VSU. However, the Blazers opened the second half on a 21-2 run and built as much as a 20-point with 11:58 to go on the way to the 10-point final margin.

Darron Johnson led UWA with 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the floor, connection on both free throws and added two assists and a rebound. Ricky Dunnaway scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds. Mike Davis finished with his first double-double as a Tiger with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Four Blazers finished in double figures led by 19 points and seven rebounds from Darrell Jones. Burke Putnam put up 12 points while Imoras Agee and Bryce Smith both scored 10. Clay Guilozet led the squad on the boards with 10 rebounds.

In the win, Valdosta State fell below season averages in points a game and shot 47.9 percent (23-of-48) from the floor, 25 percent (4-of-16) from beyond the arc and 63.3 percent (19-of-30) from the free throw line.

West Alabama will look to regroup on the road starting with a trip to Memphis, Tennessee to face the Christian Brothers Buccaneers (5-8, 2-4). Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. with the game to be broadcast on ESPN 104.9. Other game links will be available on uwaathletics.com.
