Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

UWA Wins Third Straight, 60-51, Over AUM

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama extended its winning streak to a modest three games and improved to 6-1 at home with a 60-51 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory over Auburn-Montgomery Thursday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

The Tigers are 7-3 overall after improving their GSC record to 2-2. AUM dipped to 6-6 and is winless in five conference games.

"This is the most complete game we have played this year," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "I was pleased with the way we performed after a 12-13 day layoff for the holidays even though it wasn't a great night offensively."

West Alabama shot just 38 percent from the field, making 21-of-64. The Tigers limited the Warhawks to a paltry 29 percent (16-55).

Neither team shot well from beyond the three-point arc or from the free throw line. UWA was 4-of-14 (28%) from the three-point line and 14-of-24 from the free throw stripe (58%). AUM managed to make just 7-of-32 from long range (21%), while converting 12-of-20 free throw tries (60%).

"We managed to shut down their shooters," Cram said. "We had tremendous efforts from several players, but particularly Tazsa Garrett-Hammett and Bria Dent, who are both playing hurt, as well as Zoe Watts who is a true freshman."

Garrett-Hammett led West Alabama scorers with 17 points, making 6-of-9 field goal attempts. Dent scored 10 and collected 16 rebounds for her sixth double-double. Naelyn Rios and Watts chipped in 10 points apiece. Garrett-Hammett and Watts had seven rebounds each.

Catlin Carter led all scorers with 23 points for the Warhawks. Jordan Brewster chipped in 11 and Victoria Morales 10 for AUM. Aaliyah Milord grabbed nine rebounds.

West Alabama led for over 33 minutes in a game where the lead changed hands four times and there were two ties. The Tigers controlled the inside, outrebounding AUM 49-42 and outscoring the Warhawks 32-12 in the paint.

West Alabama is host to Valdosta State (11-2, 3-2) Saturday at 2 p.m. AUM remains on the road for a 2 p.m. tipoff at Montevallo (9-1, 4-0).
