VSU Women Down Tigers, 79-67

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Kayla Bonilla scored 29 points and Valdosta State shot 58 percent from the field to defeat West Alabama, 79-67, in Gulf South Conference women's basketball Saturday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

West Alabama is 7-4 overall, 2-3 in league play after losing for just the second time in eight games at home. Valdosta State is 12-2 and 4-1, winners of five straight games.

Valdosta State led for the entire game, opening with a 24-10 first quarter and a 24-11 advantage in the third period to nail down the win. The Tigers cut the lead to eight points with 1:15 to play but couldn't get closer.

VSU led by as many as 20 as the third quarter wound to an end and West Alabama outscored the Lady Blazers by 15 in the second and fourth quarters combined.

"The good thing we can take from today is we didn't quit," Tiger head coach Rusty Cram said. "Still, you can't get down by close to 20 points too many times and expect to keep coming back. We were prepared, but not focused.

"They are a very good basketball team, but we let one get away at home," Cram said. "You can't give up 42 points in the paint turn the ball over 19 times and expect to win too many."

Twenty-eight of VSU's points in the paint came in the second half and the Lady Blazers converted UWA's 19 turnovers to 26 points. Both teams collected 32 rebounds, but VSU made 7-of-14 from beyond the three-point line and UWA made just 3-of-11.

Cheray Saunders followed Bonilla with 18 points. Nari Garner chipped in 14 and Delaney Bernard 11 for Valdosta State. Bonilla and Germani Abram both collected six rebounds.

Bri Dent led Tiger scoring with 21 points, followed by Tazsa Garrett-Hammett with 15 and Jada Golden with 11. Garrett-Hammett and Dent both had seven rebounds.

"I thought we played well offensively, but not defensively,"  Cram said. "When you allow the player you are guarding to score as many as you score, then that's pretty much a wash."

West Alabama travels to Christian Brothers (3-7, 2-4) Thursday for a 5 p.m. tipoff. Valdosta State returns home to play Mississippi College in Thursday.
