Tigers Push by Argos for 65-48 Victory

PENSACOLA, Fla. – In a game that featured double-digit scoring runs for both teams in the first half, the University of West Alabama women's basketball team found a way to slow the West Florida Argonauts in the second half on the way to a 65-48 win in the UWF Field House in Gulf South Conference action Saturday evening.

UWA improves to 9-8 this season and 4-7 in the GSC. UWF falls to 5-14 overall and 1-11 in the conference.

"I think we were more focused. They went on a run to end the first half, but we didn't have the let down in the second half," said Head coach Rusty Cram. "We got a couple of things corrected in the locker room. Just pleased with the effort overall tonight."

The first half of this one featured back and forth scoring runs for both teams. The Argos opened on an 8-0 run followed by an 18-3 run by UWA to close the first with an 18-11 lead. The Tigers pushed the lead to 27-14 in the second quarter, but West Florida ended the period on a 14-2 run to close the gap to 29-28 at the half.

However, in the second half the Tigers solved the riddle of UWF's zone defense and outscored the home team 36-20 on the way to a 65-48 win on the road.

Tazsa Garrett-Hammett finished with 21 points, 12 rebounds, four blocks, four steaks and three assists in a dominant performance against West Florida. Bria Dent was just as spectacular with 16 points and 10 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season along with three steals.

"We had a better effort from everyone tonight. Just about everyone was in the positive," said Cram. "What an effort from Tazsa tonight with a double-double and Bria had a double double as well."

Jada Golden also finished in double figures with 10 points along with three rebounds and two assists. Naelyn Rios added nine rebounds.

As a team, UWA finished 39 percent (23-of-59) from the floor, 21.1 percent (4-for-19) from three and 60 percent (15-of-25) from the line.

Rachel McCree got hot early for UWF and finished with 20 points while Danielle Norquest got NCAA Division II leading 15th double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

West Florida was 28.6 percent (16-of-56) from the field, 29.6 percent (8-of-27) from beyond the arc and 100 percent (8-of-8) from the line.

Scouting will be easy this week for the Tigers as the team returns to Pruitt Hall to face the Montevallo Falcons. UM won last Thursday's meeting 71-61.

"I've never seen it like that were you play the same teams in back to back weeks, but that's what's in front of us," said Cram. "Our team has more confidence and we know we can play with these teams."

Tipoff in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium is set for a 5:30 p.m. start. Game links are available on uwaathletics.com.
