Cold Shooting Dooms Tigers in 61-49 Loss to UWF

PENSACOLA, Fla. – After a hot performance from the floor Thursday night, the University of West Alabama men's basketball team's offense was cold against the West Florida Argonauts and led to a 61-49 loss Saturday night at the UWF Field House in Gulf South Conference action.

The Tigers fell to 14-5 overall and 7-4 in the GSC. UWF improves to 10-9 on the season and 7-5 in the conference with wins in four of the last five league games.

"We shoot like we did tonight from the field and you're not going to beat the local junior college team. We made them all the other night I guess," said Sharpe. "Give West Florida credit with the zone defense. They were very aggressive, and it felt like there were never any clean looks, no lanes to drive it or no post play to feed it to. You're not going to beat anybody scoring 49 points."

UWA shot 22.8 percent (13-of-57) from the floor and 11.5 percent (3-of-26) from three. The saving grace that gave West Alabama a chance came from the free throw line. The team put 26 shots from the line in the second half and finished the game 71.4 percent (20-of-28).

"It was a bad night for the Tigers," said Sharpe.

Rene Scott finished as the leading scorer for UWA with 12 points on an 8-of-12 effort from the free throw line along with four rebounds. Deandre Harper put up 10 points and tied for the team lead with Mike Davis for nine rebounds while Ricky Dunnaway added 10 points, eight rebounds a season high five blocks.

Jon Brown led West Florida with 20 points. Conor Flanagan added 11 points and both Cameron Cox and Tarik McKelphin scored 10.

West Alabama returns home Thursday night to face the same teams as this weekend starting with the Montevallo Falcons whom the Tigers beat 84-55 a few days ago.

However, Sharpe believes the Tigers must refocus down the stretch after a 1-1 road trip.

"We have eight seniors. Sometimes they get senioritis," said Sharpe. "They've bout had it with the coach and are ready to move on with life. I hope we don't have it with some of our guys. I hope they keep pushing forward and playing hard on the back end of this schedule. You gotta line up and play."

Tipoff in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium is set for 7:30 p.m. with game links available on uwaathletics.com.
