CBU Hangs On for Win over UWA

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Five players scored in double figures and Christian Brothers took advantage of 20 West Alabama turnovers to notch an 80-74 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory over the Tigers Thursday at Canale Arena.

CBU improved to 4-7 overall, 3-4 in GSC play with its second straight win following up a five-game losing streak. West Alabama has lost two consecutive games and is 7-5, 2-4. The Tigers have lost three of four road games.

"It's a mental game for us right now and we are turnover prone this year," Tiger head coach Rusty Cram said. "We had some key players who didn't show up to play and you cannot keep turning it over and making mental mistakes at crucial times, but the bottom line is turnovers."

West Alabama led 19-17 at the end of the first quarter, but CBU rallied to take a 40-31 lead at the half. The second period deficit came from the three-point line, with CBU hitting 5-9 in the second 15 minutes and UWA missing all five of its attempts.

"They got hot from the three point line in the first half, particularly in the second quarter," Cram said. "We made adjustments, but then they adjusted and got a couple of back door cut baskets.

"We had it their lead down to four points with a minute and a half to play, but turned it over," Cram said. "We have to keep working on fundamentals. We have a bunch of young kids having to learn at the school of hard knocks because we have upper classmen who aren't coming to play."

West Alabama cut the CBU lead to four points with 12 seconds to play on a free throw by Genesis Del Toro after the Buccaneers were charged with a clear path foul, putting the Tigers on the free throw line and with the ensuing possession.

After Del Toro made one of two free throws, West Alabama couldn't get a three-pointer to fall and Brynne Lytle put the game away, sinking a pair of free throws with five seconds left.

Lytle led all scorers with 24 points and also collected eight rebounds. Kelsey Adkins followed with 18 points, followed by Taylor Williams with 13, Lauren Taylor with 12 and Darcy Doran with 11. The Buccaneers converted 41 percent (13-of-31) from the three-point line and made 9-of-10 free throw attempts.

Bri Dent scored 19 points and was a rebound short of her seventh double-double to lead West Alabama. Zoe Watts and Jada Golden scored 11 points apiece. Watts collected eight rebounds despite being called for her fourth foul with 1:44 left in the third quarter.

"Bria is a gamer. She showed up to play," Cram said. "Still, we have to have more than one player step up to play. Zoe continues to play well as a true freshman and Lauren Lilly was a huge lift for us with good minutes off the bench."

West Alabama remains on the road, playing at No. 22 Union (12-3, 6-1) Saturday at 2 p.m. Christian Brothers is host to Montevallo Saturday.
