CBU Holds Off UWA for 66-65 GSC Win

LIVINGSTON, Ala. –West Alabama erased a 19-point deficit to take a late lead but came up just shy in a 66-65 Gulf South Conference loss to Christian Brothers Thursday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

Christian Brothers improved to 9-11 overall, 8-8 in league play. West Alabama lost its third straight, dipping to 10-12 and 5-11.

"To come back showed heart, but we weren't tough enough to start the game," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "They took it to us early. We still haven't figured out how to put four quarters together."

The game was tied three times and the lead changed hands on four occasions. CBU led by 19 points late in the second quarter, while West Alabama's largest lead was 63-61 on a jumper by Tazsa Garrett-Hammett with 2:27 left to play.

Garrett-Hammett brought the Tigers even at 61-61 with 3:30 to go on an old-fashioned three-point play. CBU's Brynne Lytle put the Lady Bucs up 64-63 with a three-pointer with 1:37 left.

UWA freshman Miya Kimber sank a pair of free throws with 1:01 to play to put the Tigers back in front, 65-64, but Lauren Taylor's layup with 25 seconds left provided the final margin. West Alabama had the ball for the final shot of the game but suffered its 16th turnover with 4.6 seconds left to end the rally.

CBU turned UWA's turnovers into 22 points and added 12 fast-break points. West Alabama outrebounded CBU, 45-32, and outscored the Lady Bucs, 46-32, in the paint.

"We are still making crucial mistakes this late in the season," Cram said. "We have four games left, so hopefully we can put something positive together to carry into next season.

"Mathematically this probably ends our tournament look barring a miracle," Cram said. "We have to find a way to finish strong and stop finding ways to lose."

Bria Dent put together her 14th double-double, scoring 22 points and collecting a career-high 21 rebounds, just four boards short of the West Alabama single-game record. Dent converted 10-of-14 field goal attempts. Garrett-Hammett scored 18 to complete double figure scoring for UWA. Jada Golden had seven rebounds.

"Bria is just Bria, she is the one player I know we are going to get 100 percent from," Cram said. "Opponents are starting to double and triple her, but she is still getting double-doubles. We need her heart and intensity to rub off."

Lytle led all scorers with 23 points, followed by Taylor with 14 and Taylor Williams with 12. Williams had six rebounds.

The Tigers host Union (20-4, 14-2) on Saturday at 2 p.m. Christian Brothers travels to Montevallo (16-7, 10-5) Saturday.
