Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bulldogs Pull Away for 70-54 Win over UWA

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's basketball team played the Union Bulldogs close for the majority of the game, but the battle tested visitors pulled away on the way to a 70-54 win Saturday afternoon in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium in Gulf South Conference action.

UWA fell to 10-13 overall and 5-12 in conference play after the loss. Union moved to 21-4 on the season and 15-3 in GSC competition.

"I thought we played harder. It really wasn't a 16-point game. They hit those three's in the last two or three minutes to get up," said Head coach Rusty Cram. "We didn't finish well. We didn't do the fundamentals of getting our hands up. They're a shooting team. That's what they're known for and that's too good of a team to give those opportunities."

The Tigers and Bulldogs battled in a back and forth first quarter 16-15, however the second quarter provided some separation for Union as the team outscored UWA 22-12 to take a 38-27 lead to half. The third was another close period with West Alabama outscoring the visitors 12-11. Then Union used late threes to win the fourth 21-15 on the way to the 70-54 final.

"We did some good things, but the biggest problem we've had all year is when we make a mistake, we let it turn into two or three mistakes. We can't stop it at one," said Cram. "We get within four or five points, next thing you know we're down by 10 or 12. We let it get away from us sometimes."

Tazsa Garrett-Hammett finished with 18 points, four rebounds and an assist to lead the team.

"I thought Tazsa showed up and had a pretty good ball game. She did well on the blocks and worked hard," said Cram. "I thought Jada (Golden) hit some good shots as well. Foul trouble took her out, so she really didn't get the minutes needed for bigger numbers."

Golden wound up with 12 points and four rebounds. Bria Dent led with 11 rebounds and added eight points.

Union's Jada Smith led all scorers with 30 points along with fix rebounds and five assists. Jacie Higgins scored 18 points and Shanique Lewis added 15 points.

West Alabama starts the final road trip of the season Thursday with a trip to Carrollton, Georgia to face the University of West Georgia Wolves. UWG (14-10, 7-9) will be coming off a 79-71 home loss to Alabama Huntsville.

Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m. central with the game being broadcast on ESPN 104.9.
