Choctaws Sweep Tigers to Open GSC Play

CLINTON, Miss. – Markarius Lee belted a bases-clearing double in the sixth inning of game two to lead Mississippi College to a 6-5 Gulf South Conference win over West Alabama and a sweep of a Saturday doubleheader at Frierson Field. The Choctaws won game one, 6-2.

Lee's blast off the wall in right field highlighted a five-run sixth inning that erased a 5-1 West Alabama lead. Casey Page drew a bases-loaded walk and Grant Barber singled in a run to complete the damage.

Mississippi College is 6-3 following the three-game sweep of the Tigers, 3-0 in GSC play. West Alabama is 5-5 and 0-3.

Jonathan Thibodeau got the Tigers on the scoreboard in the second inning of the second game with a two-run single and then drove in his third run on a safety squeeze bunt to put the Tigers up 3-1 in the top of the fourth inning.

The Tigers added two more runs in the fifth inning of the nightcap on an RBI single from Trevor Smeeton and an RBI groundout from Connor Christian.

In the first game, Mississippi College jumped to a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the third inning, but West Alabama regained the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth on RBI singled from Trevor Smeeton and Taylor  Clemmons.

The Choctaws tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single off the bat of Ken Scott. Back-to-back solo home runs from Caleb Reese and Chauncey Callier gave Mississippi College a 4-2 lead in the sixth.

Callier's second homer, a two-run shot to right field in the bottom of the eighth stretched the MC lead to the final margin.

MC reliever Bryce Lewis (1-0) picked up the game-one pitching win, allowing no earned runs and no hits over three innings. UWA starter Peyton Warren (2-1) absorbed the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings.

Austin Chastang (1-0) earned the game two win in relief. Tommy Tobarda worked a spotless final inning for his first save. UWA reliever Kirby Osborn (0-1) was tagged with the loss.

Callier added a double to his two home runs to pace a 10-hit Choctaw attack in game one. Reese, Scott and Casey Page chipped in a pair of hits apiece in the first game. UWA managed just five hits in the opening, two coming from Clemmons.

Lee, Barber, George Farid and Callier had two hits each for the Choctaws in game two. Brayden Lyman had two of UWA's seven hits in the nightcap.
