Tigers Split Doubleheader with Choctaws

CLINTON, Miss. – Road wins in the Gulf South Conference are hard to earn, but the University of West Alabama softball team was able to grab one over the Mississippi College Choctaws as the team split a doubleheader Saturday evening at Rene T. Warren Field on the campus of Hinds Community College.

After the day's games, UWA moved to 4-8 overall and 1-2 in the GSC. MC is now 6-4 on the season and 2-1 in conference play.

Game 1: West Alabama 4, Mississippi College 1

Kamree Lay (1-1) pitched a complete game and held off one of the toughest offenses in the league to get her first win of the season. The junior from Oakman, Alabama struck out six batters, held MC to its third lowest hit total of the season at five and only allowed a run in the seventh inning.

The Tigers' first run came in the top of the third on a single by Cassie Matlock to bring in Kendall Johnson

In the fourth, Matlock got two RBIs of her own with a single up the middle coupled by an error on the centerfielder Haylie Best and Kailey Hunt scored to put UWA up 3-0.

Matlock got her third RBI of the game in the sixth with another single up the middle which allowed Best to score a second time and extend the lead to 4-0.

Jordan LaFosse doubled to left center in the seventh for RBI to bring in Paige Hulin and avoid a shutout.

Avery Sanders (0-1) pitched 3.1 innings for MC with three strikeouts. She allowed five hits, two earned runs and two walks. Hannah Creel went 3.2 innings in relief and struck out three batters. She gave up two hits and a run.

West Alabama finished with seven hits and left eight runners on base while the Choctaws left four runners stranded with the five hits.

Game 2: Mississippi College 6, West Alabama 1

The second game of the day seemed as if the Tigers would career over momentum for the opening contest as Kierra Hague smashed an RBI double down the left field line to bring in Hayes Fulford to put UWA up 1-0.

From there however, it was all Mississippi College as Crawford got an RBI single through the right side to tie the game 1-1.
MC added four runs in the second inning capped by a two RBI double by Crawford to right center to put the Choctaws up 5-1.

Grace Hahn capped the scoring in the sixth inning after she scored on a wild pitch to give Mississippi College the final 6-1 mark and the win.

Caleigh Wallace (2-5) received the loss with 5.0 innings of work. She struck out a batter and allowed nine hits, a walk and two earned runs. Haley Thorpe pitched an inning in relief with a walk against her.

Avery Barnett (3-1) went all seven innings with two strikeouts and forced 15 flyouts. She allowed three hits, two walks and an earned run.

West Alabama will finally be at home Feb. 21 for the first time in the 2020 season with the opening contest of a GSC series against the West Florida Argonauts.
