Tigers Split DH with Argos in Home Opener

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The home opening day of the 2020 season at the UWA Softball Complex did not lack in excitement as the University of West Alabama softball team split a thrilling doubleheader Saturday with the West Florida Argonauts in Gulf South Conference action as the Tigers won the first game 3-0, but lost the second game 6-4.
 
After the day's games, UWA is now 5-9 on the season and 2-3 in the GSC. UWF is 9-6 overall and also 2-3 in the conference.
 
Game 1: West Alabama 3, West Florida 0
 
Kamree Lay (2-1) and the defense behind her turned in a masterful performance. The junior pitched the complete game shutout with two strikeouts for her second win of the season.
 
Kylie Martin notched the first RBI of the day a single to centerfield to bring in Hayes Fulford to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead after an inning.
 
Then in the fifth, Fulford reached on an error and Kendall Johnson came in to score. Nicole Buccieri hit an infield single for an RBI as Cassie Matlock came into score and push the lead to 3-0. From there, the Tiger defense made the right plays to keep the Argos off the board and deliver the victory.
 
Grace Gilbert (3-4) pitched six innings and allowed five hits, but none of the UWA runs were earned. 
 
Game 2: West Florida 6, West Alabama 4
 
Both teams combined for 18 hits in the second game of the as the lead swapped hands four times in UWF's win.
 
Chrissy Tubbs put the first run on the board for the Tigers in the first with an RBI single to centerfield which allowed Fulford to score and give UWA a 1-0 lead.
 
The Argos tied the game in the third thanks to Ally Merrill forcing a fielder's choice for RBI that had her out at first but allowed Gilbert to score. 
 
In the fourth, West Florida took the its lead off a homer from Kayla Mayo to go up 3-1.
 
However, UWA responded in the fifth with a two RBI double by Fulford to bring in Abby Mckee and Matlock followed by Tubbs with an RBI single to right which allowed Fulford to score and put the Tigers back on top 4-3. 
 
UWF put the final three runs on the board in the top of the seventh with a two-run homerun by Angela Agurkis and an RBI single by Mallory Vining to give the Argos the final 6-4 advantage for the win.
 
Lay (2-2) took the loss in game two as she pitched the final two innings in relief and allowed four hits and three earned runs. Caleigh Wallace pitched 3.1 innings with eight hits and three earned runs allowed. Haley Thorpe went 1.2 innings and struck out two batters.
 
Kelsey Sweatt (4-1) pitched all seven innings for West Florida with eight hits and four earned runs. She struck out eight batters.
 
UWA and UWF finish the series tomorrow with a single game starting at 1 p.m.
