Chilly Day as Tigers Begin Spring Football

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Two things you can count on in February on the campus of the University of West Alabama – the start of spring football and nasty weather.
 
Both came to pass Thursday as UWA began spring drills in shorts and helmets on a day when the wind chill dipped into the 30s accompanied by misting rain and a 14-mile-per-hour north wind.
 
The Tigers worked for about two hours in the first of 15 allowed spring practices. UWA will be in shorts again Friday before putting on full gear for the first time Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
 
"We had great energy and excitement today in some cold, rainy conditions," UWA head coach Brett Gilliland said. "The attitudes were good, and guys were flying around."
 
Along with returning players, UWA's 11 mid-year signees were evaluated live for the first time as a Tiger at Thursday's workout. Getting ready for his seventh season at his alma mater, Gilliland liked what he saw.
 
"It is always good to see the new mid-year additions for the first time," Gilliland said. "As always, there is only so much you can tell in shorts and helmets, but we are excited to see this team continue to attack practice."
 
West Alabama's annual Red-White spring game is scheduled for Saturday, March 14 with kickoff at 10:30 a.m. on a busy day for Tigers. The UWA baseball and softball teams will host Delta State in the afternoon and the Annual Football Drawdown will take place that evening at 6:30 p.m. in the Bell Conference Center.
 
Admission to the Drawdown is $100 for two, which also covers one drawdown entry. A sponsorship is also available for $400 which will allow sponsors to place a logo on all available material in addition to one registration.
