Chargers Rally to Sweep UWA

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Zach Duvall's single through a drawn in infield in the bottom of the 11th inning gave Alabama Huntsville a 6-5 win in the second game and a sweep of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader over West Alabama Saturday at Charger Park. UAH won the opener, 11-9

The sweep improves UAH to 11-5 overall, 6-2 in GSC play. West Alabama is 6-9 and 1-7. The third game of the series is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.

After battling back from a 9-3 deficit in game one only to come up short with the tying runs on base in the ninth inning, the Tigers led 4-1 after five innings in the nightcap.

UAH tied the score at 4-4 with an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh in the second game. Ryan Dell doubled to lead off the UWA eighth and scored on a Charger passed ball to put UWA up 5-4, but UAH answered with a run in the bottom of the inning.

Will Acuff walked and Palmer Ford singled to start the bottom of the 11th for UAH. Both advanced on a wild pitch before Drake Hollingsworth was intentionally walked to load the bases. Duvall's game-winner came in the next at bat.

Both starting pitchers figured in the decision in the first game, with Tyler Self (3-1) earning the win after working six innings and striking out 10. Parker Warren got the final two outs to earn his second save. Peyton Warren (3-2) was tagged with the loss, allowing eight hits and two earned runs in three innings pitched.

UAH reliever Kody Keiser (1-0) worked the top of the 11th inning for the pitching win in game two, striking out two. Tiger reliver Austin Kitterman (1-3) took the loss in game two, allowing one run on three hits and striking out three in two-plus innings of work.

Gavin Rogers had four hits in the doubleheader for West Alabama. JD Roberts rapped out three hits in the opener, while Austin Moffett chipped in two and Trevor Smeeton drove in a pair. Taylor Clemmons and Dell had two hits for UWA in the nightcap.

Tyler McCown and John Trousdale hit back-to-back solo home runs for UAH in game one. It was the first of the season for McCown and Trousdale's second.

McCown, Malave Bettinger, Palmer Ford, Wes Anderson, Drake Hollingsworth and Acuff had two hits apiece in a 16-hit Charger attack that survived seven errors in game one. Trousdale, Hunter Nabors, Garrett Bodine and Duvall had two hits each for UAH in game two.
