Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers Hand #24 UAH First Home Loss in 75-54 Victory

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The shooting woes that plagued the University of West Alabama men's basketball team in the first matchup against the #24 Alabama Huntsville Chargers did not transfer to Spragins Hall for the second meeting, as the Tigers handed UAH its first home loss of the season 75-54 Thursday night in Gulf South Conference action.

UWA improved to 17-5 on the season and 10-4 in the GSC. The Chargers fell to 17-5 and 9-5 in the conference.

"This was a really important game we had to have," said Associate Head coach Nick Woodruff. "I said it last week you can't back your way into a conference title. When you hold teams to 54 points it gives you a chance to get these tough road wins in this conference."

The Tigers led wire to wire in the victory outscoring Alabama Huntsville 38-32 in the first half and 37-22 in the second half.

LaJuan Hardy led with 18 points, five rebounds, three steals and three assists. Rene Scott was right behind him with 17 points including a 3-of-4 effort from behind the arc along with four assists, a rebound and steal.

"We did something different with Rene handling the ball more," said Woodruff. "He's a flash on the court and with handling the ball more it opens up the floor because you can't sag off of Darron (Johnson) and LJ (Hardy)."

Mike Davis finished with a double double thanks to his 13 points and 15 rebounds along with three blocks, two assists and a steal. Both Ricky Dunnaway and Deandre Harper ended with eight points and four rebounds each.

As a team, West Alabama shot 58 percent (29-of-50) from the floor, 42.9 percent (12-of-28) from three and 83.3 percent (5-of-6) from the free throw line.

None of the UAH starters scored in double figures and Henley Edge's 10 points all came with less than five minutes remaining in the contest.

The Tigers limited Alabama Huntsville to 37.3 percent (19-of-51) from field with the shots from behind the arc keeping the team close with a 47.6 percent effort (10-of-21). However, UWA limited the Chargers to 30 percent (3-of-10) from the three-point line in the second half to pull away for the win.

UWA won on the boards 32-22, points on turnovers 17-10, points in the paint 32-18 and fast break points 7-2. Both teams committed 14 turnovers and UAH's bench outscored the Tigers 31-13.

West Alabama returns to action Saturday in Cleveland, Tennessee against Lee University. The Flames are coming off a 66-58 win over Montevallo.

Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. central with the game broadcast set for ESPN 104.9. Additional game links are available on uwaathletics.com.
