Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Flames Pull Away for 69-58 Win

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Turnovers in key stretches for the University of West Alabama men's basketball team doomed the team's hopes of a regular season sweep of Lee University as the Flames captured a 69-58 victory Saturday night in Paul Dana Walker Arena in Gulf South Conference action.

UWA dropped to 17-6 on the season and 10-5 in the GSC. Lee improved to 18-4 overall, 13-2 in the league and 11-0 at home.

"Give credit to Lee. That's a really good team and they defended home court tonight," said Associate Head coach Nick Woodruff. "They did a good job down the stretch shooting the gap on us off our screens and forcing turnovers to pull away at the end."

The Tigers were up 43-40 at the 10:17 mark and had seeming seized momentum. However, Lee forced four turnovers on the way to a 9-0 run to go up 50-43 with 7:06 left. From there, UWA only got as close as down five points before the Flames pushed on to the 11-point victory.

"This was a tough one to lose," said Woodruff. "We talked about how it was important to go 2-0 on this road trip and that we couldn't be satisfied with 1-1. There's nothing easy left on our schedule. Hopefully this will show how every possession is critical for our team."

Ricky Dunnaway did his part on the road tonight as the senior post player finished with 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting with 11 rebounds, three blocks, a steal and an assist.

"We knew post play would be important tonight and Ricky did a good job in the interior," said Woodruff.

LaJuan Hardy went for 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

The Tigers were 40.7 percent (22-of-54) from the floor, 15.4 percent (2-of-13) from three and 66.7 percent (12-of-18) from the free throw line.

UWA edged out the Flames on the boards 35-34, but Lee won points off turnovers 18-11, points in the paint 34-32, fast break 18-12, and second chance buckets 8-5.

Ryan Montgomery and Parker Suedekum both scored 19 points each in the victory. Quay Kennedy led on the boards with 10 rebounds and added nine points as well.

As a team, the Flames shot 46,4 percent (26-of-56) from the field, 33.3 percent (6-of-18) from the three-point line and 55 percent (11-of-20) from the free throw line.

West Alabama returns to action in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium on Feb. 13 against Christian Brothers. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. with the game being broadcast on ESPN 104.9.
