Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

UAH Cruises by UWA, 70-46

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Alabama Huntsville was never challenged on the way to extending its winning streak to five games with a 70-46 Gulf South Conference women's basketball win over West Alabama at Spragins Hall.

The Chargers are 12-8 overall and 9-5 in GSC play, having won seven of 10 on its home court. West Alabama is 10-10 and 5-9.

UAH built an 11-point lead after the first 10 minutes and led 37-17 at the half. The Charger defense limited UWA to just 29 percent shooting (8-of-27) from the floor over the first two quarters, including just six points in the second quarter.

The Chargers stretched the lead to 59-31 by the end of three quarters, UAH's largest lead of the game. UAH never trailed and led from its first basket, a layup by Holly Harris at 9:42 in the first quarter.

"We were out of it from start to finish," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "We couldn't defend our shadow and couldn't hit a shot.

"We just got whipped. We got hit in the face and took it," Cram said. "We lost our focus and never tried to recover. Simple things became big things for us, and it just snowballed. They had a great night and an answer for everything we threw at them."

UAH shot 45 percent (28-for-61) from the floor. West Alabama answered with 31 percent (18-for-58). The Tigers failed to convert on 13 three-point attempts. UAH was 7-for-22 from long range.

UAH outscored the Tigers 40-32 in the paint even though UWA had a 38-36 rebounding advantage.

Selena Pruitt scored 19 points to lead four Chargers in double figures. Harris added 12, while Sloan Mann and Aryn Sanders chipped in 10 apiece. Pruitt, Sanders and Katie Speegle had five rebounds each for UAH.

UWA freshman Miya Kimber had 10 points and 10 rebounds for her first collegiate double-double, drilling 8-of-8 from the free throw line. Tazsa Garrett-Hammett also had 10 points and was the only other Tiger in double digits. Bria Dent had a game-high eight rebounds.

"This is the time of the year when teams start  separating, some are getting ready for the tournament and some are just giving up," Cram said. "I don't want to be one of those who are giving up. Hopefully this got our attention before  we go to play a top seven team at their place."

West Alabama continues its road swing at Lee (21-1, 13-1) on Saturday. Tipoff is 4 p.m. central time. Alabama Huntsville is host to Montevallo on Saturday.
