Tigers Drop Two in Low Scoring Day in FTI

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Offense was hard to come by for the University of West Alabama softball team on the first day of the Florida Tech Invitational as the Tigers dropped a pair of one run games with a 2-1 loss to the Saint Leo Lions and a 1-0 loss to the Florida Southern Mocs.

Saint Leo 2, UWA 1

In a contest that featured 11 hits between both teams, scoring itself was more of a premium than expected.

Grace Self homered in the top of the second to represent the lone run for the Tigers in the contest. For Self, it was her first home run of the 2020 season.

The 1-0 lead held until the bottom of the fifth inning where Amanda James and Maddy Lynn both knocked in runs to give the Lions the 2-1 winning edge.

Caleigh Wallace (1-2) received the loss in a relief appearance in 2.2 innings while allowing five hits, both the earned runs and getting a strikeout. Haley Thorpe started in the circle with one hit, four walks and a hit batter in 2.0 innings of work. Kamree Lay pitched 1.1 innings and allowed a hit and got a strikeout.

Madi Mott (3-0) pitched all seven innings for the Lions with six strikeouts while allowing four hits, a pair walks and the home run to Self.

Florida Southern 1, UWA 0

Offense was even harder to come by in the second game of the day as the winning run didn't come until the top of the seventh where Meghan Sexton singled to allow Maddi Conner to score the lone run of the contest.

There were seven hits the entire game as Alli Craft and Cassie Matlock got one a piece from the starting lineup while Abby McKee and Kierra Hague each cashed in on pinch hit appearances.

Lay (0-1) went all seven innings with four strikeouts while surrendering three hits, two walks and the one run allowed.

Tianna Hernandez (2-1) also pitched all seven innings and collected five strikeouts with four hits and three walks allowed.

West Alabama returns to action tomorrow against Palm Beach Atlantic at 11 a.m. central time. PBA went 0-2 to open the tournament with a 6-3 loss to New Haven to start the day and 3-2 loss in eight innings against West Florida.
