Tigers Earn Split on FTI Second Day

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The University of West Alabama softball team used a late rally in the second game of the day to earn a split on the second day of the Florida Tech Innovational after falling to the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish 7-3 in the early game and earning the come from behind win against the Molloy College Lions 7-5.

The PBA Sailfish jumped ahead early with five runs in the first highlighted by a three-RBI double from Edmilly Molina. Molina later scored on a single from Katherine Budnovich.
 
Alli Craft responded in the bottom of the first with a single through the shortstop to bring in Hayes Fulford and Kierra Hague to close the gap to 5-2.
 
Then in the third, Caleigh Wallace singled to center which allowed Cassie Matlock to cross the plate to make the game 5-3.
 
However, in the top of the seventh Maddie Biggs singled to centerfield for an RBI and later scored on a fielder's choice as the Sailfish went up 7-3 which held as the final margin.
 
Haley Thorpe (1-2) took the loss with two hits, two walks and four earned runs allowed in the first inning. Wallace pitched six innings with a strikeout while allowing five hits, two walks and two earned runs. Kamree Lay pitched an inning with two hits and an earned run.
 
Abbey Busby pitched a complete game putting up eight strikeouts with three hits, a walk and three earned runs.
 
UWA 7, Molloy College 5
 
Molloy got an early lead with three runs in the first and two more in the fourth to take a commanding 5-0 lead.
 
From there, it was all West Alabama starting with an RBI double from Haylie Best to bring in Chrissy Tubbs. Matlock grabbed an RBI after Best scored to bring the score to 5-2 after the fifth inning. 
 
In the top of the sixth, Best smashed an RBI triple to bring home Tubbs once more and Fulford hit an RBI double to bring in Best. Matlock capped the sixth with an RBI double to bring in Fulford which tied the game 5-5.
 
Tubbs finished the rally in the top of the seventh with a double to being in Kailey Hunt and Kendall Johnson to get UWA to the 7-5 final winning mark. 
 
Wallace (2-2) got the win in three innings of work and retired all 10 batters she faced. Lay started in the circle and pitched 1.2 innings with three strikeouts, five hits and three earned runs. Thorpe went 2.1 innings with a strikeout, walk and hit while Kat Burks also made a brief appearance. 
 
West Alabama will wrap the tournament Sunday at 10 a.m. against Florida Tech. Game links will be available on uwaathletics.com.
