Tigers, Canes Split Doubleheader

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama and Georgia Southwestern split a college baseball doubleheader Saturday at Tartt Field, with UWA winning the opener, 6-3, and GSW taking the nightcap by the same score.
 
West Alabama is 4-2. Georgia Southwestern is 1-4. The rubber game of the series is Sunday at 1 p.m.
 
Tied at 1-1 in the opener, West Alabama used three hits and a pair of GSW errors to score four runs in the fifth. Trevor Smeeton drove in a run with a single in the frame, but the reminder of the runs in the inning were scored without the aid of a base hit.
 
Gavin Rogers opened the scoring for UWA with a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning, his second homer of the year. Brayden Lyman drove in a run in the seventh to close out Tiger scoring in game one.
 
Anthony Angelino drove in a run in the third to stake the Hurricanes to a 1-0 lead in the third inning of game one. GSW tacked on two more in the eighth on an RB double from Miguel Urbina and a Matthew Mamatas single.
 
The Canes struck early in the nightcap, scoring four runs on five hits and a Tiger error in the first inning Sam Marques doubled in a pair of runs and Lucas Trebian singled in another. Georgia Southwestern scored single runs in the fifth and seventh innings.
 
Derek Barone tripled in a run and Colden Peeples singled in another in the UWA half of the second, but the Tigers would not get another hit until a Trenton Lee RBI double in the seventh.
 
UWA starter Mason Hollander (2-0) allowed one run on five hits while striking out eight in six innings to earn the win the first game. Kolby Crowley worked a scoreless ninth for his first save. GSW starter Tucker Smith (0-2) took the loss, allowing five hits and two earned runs in four innings.
 
Cody Ogilvie (1-0) allowed just one hit and one run in 5.2 innings in relief of starter Nick McCollum for the Canes win in game two. Cole Garret earned his first save, striking out two in the ninth. UWA starter Colin Chamblin (0-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits. Connor Brooks struck out 12 in five innings of relief.
 
Lyman was the only Tiger to collect multiple hits, getting two in the first game.
 
Gunner George and Mamatas combined for four hits apiece in the doubleheader. Angelino had three hits in the two games and Marques drove in three runs in game two.
