Tigers Split First Day at Red-White-Blue Classic

COLUMBUS, Ga. – An up and down day for the University of West Alabama softball team as the Tigers split both games of the opening day of the Red-White-Blue Classic hosted by Columbus State with a win over Lynn, 5-3, and a loss to the host CSU 4-2.
 
Hayes Fulford made her presence felt early for the Tigers (6-14) as she was responsible for the first three first runs with a two-run homer to left center in the first of Lynn (10-13) contest that brought in Chrissy Tubbs and then an in-field single in the third to score Cassie Matlock to put the team up 3-1.
 
Lynn added a run in the third, but Kendall Johnson hit an RBI single in the fourth to bring in Lee Lee Parker and Matlock had and singled in Johnson to put UWA up 5-2. The Fighting Knights added one more one in the fourth the get to the 5-3 final.
 
Kamree Lay (3-4) pitched 6.2 innings with three strikeouts. She allowed six hits and an earned run. Caleigh Wallace (1) earned her first save of the year by recording the final out on three pitches.
 
All of the Tigers runs against CSU (9-8) came in the sixth inning. The Cougars got up 4-0 before Abby McKee scored on an error with the bases loaded. Fulford got her fourth RBI of the day on a fielder's choice by the third baseman, Johnson scored to make the game 4-2 which held as the final.
 
UWA left 11 runners on base against Columbus State while the Cougars left nine on the bases.
 
Wallace (2-7) pitched 3.1 innings in the loss with three earned runs, three hits and two walks allowed. Haley Thorpe threw 0.2 innings with a strikeout, three walks and an earned run. Kat Burks pitched 2.0 innings with two hits allowed.
 
West Alabama concludes the Red-White-Blue Classic tomorrow starting at 9 a.m. central with a second matchup against Lynn and will conclude the day with Erskine at 1 p.m.
