Union Completes Sweep at UWA

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama dug a deep hole, crawled back high enough to see over the rim and then watched as Union roared back for a 66-54 Gulf South Conference men's basketball victory Saturday at Pruitt Hall.

Union improved to 8-4 overall (8-4 GSC) with its third win over West Alabama in four meetings this season. The Tigers dropped to 3-3 overall (3-3 GSC) following its fourth game against Union in 16 days.

Union jumped to a 17-1 lead in the first nine minutes and led 21-3 at the 10:43 mark of the first half. The Bulldogs never trailed and limited UWA to less than 60 points for the third time this season.

"We didn't quit and we could have rolled over," UWA head coach Nick Woodruff said. "We knew scoring could be an issue coming into this season and that's why our defense has to be good. Union makes it hard to defend them."

The Bulldogs shot 53 percent (25-for-47) from the floor and outrebounded the Tigers 35-23. West Alabama answered by making 40 percent (19-of-47) from the field.

Union used a 13-2 run late in the first half to take a 32-23 lead into halftime. West Alabama cut the lead to 40-35 with 12:42 left to play on a Kortrijk Miles putback, but the Tigers would get no closer.

The Bulldogs put together a 12-2 run midway through the second half to stretch its lead to 52-37 with 7:39 left and were never threatened the rest of the way. Union stretched the lead to as much as 18 points on a dunk by JC Clausi with 3:49 left and kept a double-digit advantage until the final horn.

"We have to continue to get better," Woodruff said. "I have to do a better job of coaching the offense. I have confidence we will continue to work to get better."

Tylandrius Parks scored 16 points to lead Union, followed by Justin Debuck with 12 and Hunter Vick with 11. Dusan Djordjevic collected a game-high seven rebounds.

Robert Davis scored 16 to lead West Alabama. Miles chipped in 11 to round out double-figure scoring for the Tigers while collecting five boards.

"It's not going to be for the faint of heart or the soft and it will be really uncomfortable being around here next week, being around me next week," Woodruff said. "Losing just cannot be acceptable. If we don't improve it won't be for a lack of effort."

The path doesn't get any easier for West Alabama with 12th-ranked Alabama Huntsville visiting Pruitt Hall Friday and Saturday. The Chargers are 6-1 overall (6-0 GSC) and are riding a six-game winning streak. Tip offs are set for 6 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday.
