UAH Hangs on to Defeat Tigers at Pruitt

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Sam Orf and JT Kaplan combined to score over half of Alabama Huntsville's total points as the 11th-ranked Chargers defeated West Alabama, 66-55, in Gulf South Conference men's basketball Friday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

The win was the seventh straight for Alabama Huntsville, who improved to 7-1 overall, 7-0 in GSC play. West Alabama lost its third straight and dipped to 3-4 overall and in league play. The Tigers and Chargers finish the two-game set Saturday at Pruitt Hall at 2 p.m.

Orf led all scorers with 18 points, while Kaplan recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds to pace the GSC West Division leaders.

"This group is still trying to figure what it takes to win, how hard it is to win, but we aren't giving up or giving in." UWA head coach Nick Woodruff said. "Our kids keep fighting and I am proud of the effort and the fight from this group.

"Still, there are no moral victories, not everybody gets a trophy," Woodruff said. "There is a winner and there is a loser."

In a back-and-forth first half that saw the lead change hands seven times Alabama Huntsville took a 30-27 lead into the break. The Chargers connected on 46 percent from the floor  in the opening 20 minutes, but West Alabama kept it to a three-point deficit by turning eight UAH turnovers into nine points. The Tigers had five steals in the first half and committed just three turnovers.

UAH opened the second half with a 18-2 run to stretch its lead to 48-29 with 14:23 left to play. The Chargers hit seven of their first 10 field goal attempts, including 4-of-7 from beyond the three-point line to highlight the run. UWA answered by making 2-of-8 field goals over that stretch.

"Alabama Huntsville is a very good basketball team," Woodruff said. "They make open shots and they make timely shots. You have to give them a lot of credit."

The Tigers cut the UAH lead to six points at 54-48 on a pair of three-pointers from Justin Allison, one at the 7:16 mark and another at 5:48, but it was not enough to offset 11 second-half turnovers by the Tigers that resulted in 19 Charger points.

"A big part of the second half was our turnovers against their 1-2-2 press," Woodruff said. "If you slip up or take a pass for granted, then you end up with turnovers and you can't give a good team like UAH 14 extra chances."

Shardarrion Allen  and Roger Davis led West Alabama scorers with 12 points apiece. Allison chipped in 11. Kainan Pouncey led Tiger rebounders with six and Robert Davis dished out eight assists.

Following the give-and-take of the first half, UAH never trailed over the final 20 minutes on the way to leading for 27:28 over the course of the game. The Chargers made 11 three-points, seven in the second half.

Alabama Huntsville outrebounded the Tigers 34-31 while shooting 47 percent (25-of-53). UWA shot 37 percent from the floor (20-for-54).
