Mississippi College Grabs 2-0 Victory over Men’s Soccer

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - It was a tough weekend for the UWA men's soccer team as they closed out the two-match weekend series with a Gulf South Conference loss. Mississippi College grabbed a 2-0 victory over West Alabama Sunday evening at Tiger Stadium.

The Tigers dropped to 3-5 overall and are now 1-2 in GSC play. The Choctaws improved to 4-4-1 on the year and are 3-2-1 in the conference. 

MC scored the first goal of the match in the 18th minute, giving the Choctaws a 1-0 lead over the Tigers. West Alabama took one shot in the first half while Mississippi College fired off four. 

The pace picked up in the second half and the Tigers took nine shots but were not able to find the back of the net. The Choctaws took 10 more shots and managed to score again, giving them a 2-0 advantage over UWA. 

After the second goal, the Tigers and Choctaws kept the competitive play alive, but Mississippi College closed out the match with a 2-0 victory. 

Mississippi College outshot West Alabama by four. MC took 14 shots while UWA took 10, and won the shots on goal battle, 9-3.

Kyle McLeod fired off three shots while taking one shot on goal. Peter Oyetunji took two shots, both being on goal.

Harry Deveney was between the posts for the Tigers. The Liverpool, England native recorded seven saves and allowed two goals in the 90 minutes of action.

The Choctaws goalkeeper Alejandro Chavarria recorded three saves in the victory over the Tigers.

UWA returns to GSC play October 8 against Christian Brothers. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Memphis, Tennessee.
