LIVINGSTON, Ala. – After a rocky first half, the West Alabama men's basketball team rallied back to defeat conference-rival Shorter University, 80-65, on Saturday inside Pruitt Hall Gymnasium. With the victory, the Tigers improve to a program-best start 10-2 and 3-1 in conference play.
Heading the office, Robert Davis and Kortrijk Miles saw 20-plus points against the Hawks. Davis, a senior from Clinton, Miss., saw a career-high 25 points to lead UWA, while Miles gathered 24 with a game-high nine rebounds.
Local student-athlete Calvin Finch tied Miles to bring down nine boards and added eight to the scoring effort. Junior guard Shardarrion Allen was the only other Tiger with double-figures to tally 14 points on the night.
As a team, the Tigers went 27-for-60 (45.0%) from the field with just 2-of-15 (13.3%) from beyond the arc. West Alabama made 24-of-29 at the line to make 82.8 percent of its free throws.
Shorter (3-7, 0-5) was led by senior forward Mark Wilcox, Jr. with 20 points and sophomore guard Grant Atchley with 14. As a team, the Hawks made 21-of-41 (51.2%) from the floor, 7-of-11 (63.6%) in three-point range, and 16-of-25 (64.0%) at the line.
Tigers outscored the Hawks in the paint 42-26 and had more points off turnovers 21-9. UWA also did better on rebounds, bringing down 37-24.
West Alabama will be back in action on Friday, Dec. 31, hosting West Florida. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
